It looks like a gas station, so why is the proposed Gas N Wash called a Truck Stop?
Gas N Wash wants video gaming. As a gas station, to install gaming seats, known as Video Gaming Terminals, VGTs, it must qualify as a truck stop.
Proposed Gas N Wash fueling station is classified as a Truck Stop
There has been a lot of confusion about gas station versus truck stop.
Most people think a truck stop is one of those large fueling stations out on the highway with dozens of pumps to fill the tanks of 18 wheelers. They are correct. And most people think truck stops have a yard to park the big rigs so the drivers can sleep, and a diner, showers, laundry services and more for the truckers who travel long distances. They are also correct.
In the case of the proposed Wheeling Gas N Wash station, it won’t have any of the classic truck stop features: it won’t have showers, laundry or overnight parking for dozens of 18 wheelers. What it will have are the features the Illinois Gaming Board requires for video gaming at a gas station – and that means Gas N Wash needs to be classified as a Truck Stop.
There are five main requirements that a truck stop must meet to be eligible for a video gaming license in Illinois:
- Must be situated on at least three acres of land
- Must have separate diesel islands for fueling commercial motor vehicles
- Must have average sales of over 10,000 gallons of diesel or biodiesel per month
- Must have parking spaces for commercial motor vehicles
- Must contain a convenience store
Does Wheeling really need more Video Gaming?
